Key figures in Nigeria’s political opposition have converged at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for the formal unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the official platform for their emerging coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among the prominent attendees are former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party’s 2023 flagbearer, Mr Peter Obi; former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai; and former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi.
Also in attendance are former Senate President, David Mark, and ex-Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola. Both were recently named interim national chairman and national secretary of the ADC, respectively.
The event marks a significant step in the opposition’s ongoing efforts to form a united front to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
More details are expected to emerge from the high-level meeting, which signals a major realignment in the country’s political landscape.
