The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, has confirmed that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has formally submitted a proposal to serve only one term if elected President in 2027.

Tanko disclosed that Obi’s single-term pledge has been presented to the opposition coalition, which includes key political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that Obi, speaking on Monday, declared his readiness to serve for only four years if elected, in alignment with what he described as Nigeria’s “unwritten power-sharing agreement” and the principles of zoning.

“Any candidate from the South elected president in the next election must be prepared to leave office on May 28, 2031,” Obi stated.

The emerging coalition, formed to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday as its political platform.

Tanko, speaking on behalf of the movement, affirmed that the proposal has been submitted and is now under consideration by coalition leaders.

“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision. But we are confident it can work. This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that. What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity,” Tanko said.

He acknowledged that while the constitution does not mandate a single term, Obi is convinced that four years is sufficient to implement his vision and reforms for Nigeria.

Obi’s proposal is expected to further shape the coalition’s strategy and may influence negotiations as opposition forces work toward presenting a unified front in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.
