Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has clarified the reason behind his absence at the burial ceremony of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which was held on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was notably absent from the state burial ceremony, drawing criticism from some quarters. Addressing the concerns during an interview with Arise Television, Obi attributed his absence to logistical challenges, specifically the unavailability of flights into Katsina.
“It was difficult to come yesterday because there was no flight,” Obi said. “Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed, because there was a lot of dignitaries.”
Despite missing the official burial, Obi visited the family of the late President on Wednesday in Daura to personally extend his condolences.
“Mourning continues until tomorrow. So, whoever comes today and tomorrow, is still part of the mourning,” he added.
Obi’s visit was part of ongoing tributes from political leaders across the country following the death of the former Head of State and two-term civilian President, who passed away in London after a prolonged illness.
