The Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Prof. James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, has raised concerns over escalating cross-border attacks on Benue communities, alleging that the assailants originate from neighbouring Nasarawa State before retreating there after launching assaults.
Prof. Ayatse made the disclosure on Tuesday during the official visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Benue State. The visit featured engagements with state officials, traditional rulers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative outreach.
“Your Excellency Ma, our attackers come from Nasarawa State. After attacking us, they withdraw and go back to Nasarawa State,” the monarch told the First Lady in the presence of traditional council members and government dignitaries.
He urged Senator Tinubu to present the Tiv people’s concerns to President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that lasting peace in Benue would require decisive federal action.
Prof. Ayatse commended the First Lady for her show of solidarity with victims of violence in the state and for her humanitarian support through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
Responding, Senator Tinubu expressed empathy for the plight of the affected communities and assured the monarch that she would convey his message directly to the president.
She reiterated the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace and providing relief to displaced and traumatised residents.
