The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, is not a registered member of the party despite his active participation in its coalition.
Speaking on Wednesday night during an appearance on Channels Television, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, addressed growing speculation surrounding Obi’s political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Peter Obi has been part of the coalition from day one,” Abdullahi stated. “He has attended almost every meeting of the coalition.”
According to him, Obi requested leave from officially joining the ADC as a card-carrying member in order to complete the electoral process with the Labour Party, under which he contested the 2023 presidential election.
“The reason Peter Obi has not come into the ADC as a card-carrying member is because he asked for leave to allow him complete the election that his people were involved in Labour Party,” he explained.
Abdullahi also mentioned that the same courtesy was extended to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who was also involved in a separate electoral process under another platform.
“The same thing applies to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. And they were both allowed by the leadership to complete the election processes that they started in their respective parties,” he noted.
“Peter Obi is a member of the coalition, but not a card-carrying member of the ADC,” Abdullahi concluded.
The clarification comes amid intense political speculation over Obi’s next political move and his possible platform for the 2027 presidential election, with various opposition groups seeking to consolidate forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
