Activist and former co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has stated that Peter Obi, a key member of Nigeria’s opposition coalition, remains committed to serving only one term if elected President.

Yesufu, a prominent supporter of the former Labour Party presidential candidate, revealed that Obi personally gave her his word regarding his one-term presidency vow.

According to her, Obi has consistently referenced South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela as an inspiration for his one-term stance.

Posting via her official handle on X, Yesufu recalled discussions she had with Obi during the 2023 election campaign.

“I, Aisha Yesufu, can confirm that Mr Peter Gregory Obi has always said he would do just a term even before the 2023 election. I used to argue with him that one term is not enough and he can’t just refuse to contest,” she wrote.

She further explained how Obi remained firm on the matter despite her repeated pushback.

“In fact, I told him on several occasions while we were campaigning in 2022 that the people will not allow him to do just a term. He would use Nelson Mandela as example. He would explain that if one was ready to really work, that a term was more than enough.”

Yesufu said she informed Obi of her intention to speak publicly about his one-term pledge and sought his direct confirmation for the sake of her personal integrity.

“I told him that I was going to speak of his promise to do one term only publicly and I needed his confirmation on doing a term, as my integrity mattered to me and I wouldn’t want to say something and it turns out not to be so,” she said.

“Mr Peter Obi once again gave me his word that he was going to do only one term.”
