Fresh tension has engulfed Yelwata community in Benue State following a renewed attack by gunmen in the early hours of Monday.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident sparked a protest by local women, who took to the streets demanding the withdrawal of soldiers stationed in the area to their barracks.
The aggrieved residents also called for immediate transportation to Makurdi, insisting they no longer feel secure in the community.
“They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one protester said.
The latest violence comes less than two months after armed men, believed to be herders, attacked the community on June 13, killing about 200 people, including internally displaced persons, with many victims burned alive during a night of intense violence.
