The chairperson of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Dayo Ekong, has claimed that the political relevance of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is on the decline.
In a statement shared on her X handle on Tuesday, Ekong argued that Obi’s surge in popularity during the 2023 elections was not due to his personality alone but was driven by strong party structures, grassroots mobilisation, and widespread public demand for change.
She noted that the momentum that once carried him is now diminishing because of what she described as divisive decisions and inconsistent political moves.
“In 2023, Nigerians rallied behind him because he represented a fresh alternative. But today, his actions are beginning to erode the foundation of that support,” Ekong stated.
She cited Obi’s decision to back Olumide Akpata, the LP’s candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, against the preference of some party leaders, as an example of actions that have weakened his influence.
