The Nigerian government has closed 13,597,057 social media accounts found to have violated the Code of Practice for interactive platforms.

The accounts were removed across TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X for offensive content and breaches of community rules. This was contained in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted by major platforms including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

The Code of Practice was jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

According to the report, a total of 58,909,112 offensive posts were taken down, while 754,629 complaints were recorded from Nigerian users. Out of these, 420,439 pieces of content were later restored following appeals.

Hadiza Umar, spokesperson for NITDA, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, commending platforms for their cooperation.

She noted that the compliance reports highlight efforts by tech companies to address online harms, adding that the exercise is a step toward creating a safer and more responsible digital environment in Nigeria.

Umar stressed that government remains committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulators to strengthen safety measures, improve digital literacy, and promote transparency in Nigeria’s digital space.
