The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned Bernard Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum Constituency, after he publicly revealed details of alleged diversion of funds by lawmakers.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon Tony Muobike of Aguata 2 constituency, who argued that Udemezue’s social media posts were damaging to the reputation of the House and could endanger members’ safety.
Udemezue, a Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker in a chamber dominated by the All Progressives Grand Alliance, had disclosed how members collect and pocket constituency allowances meant for projects. He also revealed the exact amounts each legislator receives.
Speaking to journalists, he defended his actions, saying his decision was guided by his campaign promise to be transparent.
“Yes, I posted something on social media. That was my constituency’s empowerment fund and my overhead allowance. I did so because before the election, I promised my people that I would be transparent. Every three months, I get N7.5 million for them, later increased to N10 million. But my colleagues are not happy because I revealed this,” he explained.
Udemezue accused fellow lawmakers of misusing the funds and failing in their duties of lawmaking, representation, and oversight. He insisted he had no regrets about informing his constituents.
During plenary, Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, which is expected to report back next Tuesday.
The development has stirred public debate, with some citizens accusing lawmakers of hiding behind claims of underfunding by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to justify their actions.
A respondent, Chuka Eze, said, “This will expose the true selfish nature of our representatives. They made it look like the governor was starving them of funds, but the real truth is now coming out.”
