The Federal Government has attributed Wednesday’s national grid collapse, which occurred at about 11:20 am, to the tripping of a power generation company that triggered a chain reaction across other GenCos.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which oversees the grid, confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that the sudden load drop cascaded through the network and led to a widespread system disturbance.

According to NISO, restoration efforts commenced almost immediately. “NISO began restoration at 11:45 hours, starting with supply from the Shiroro power plant to Abuja. Substantial progress has since been made in restoring supply across the country,” the statement read.

The agency added that a full investigation had been launched to establish both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse. “The findings of the investigation will guide remedial and preventive measures to avert future occurrences. We appeal for patience as restoration continues,” NISO said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, power supply had been restored in parts of Abuja, while other regions were gradually being reconnected to the grid.
