Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered a collapse at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, triggering widespread outages across the country.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company separately confirmed the disruption in notices to customers.

In an update on X, the National Grid announced that restoration efforts had commenced, with 495 megawatts already reallocated to several distribution companies: Abuja (150 MW), Eko (80 MW), Ikeja (80 MW), Ibadan (50 MW), Benin (40 MW), Enugu (40 MW), Kano (35 MW), and Kaduna (25 MW). However, Port Harcourt, Jos, and Yola discos were still at zero megawatts as of press time.

Some residents in Abuja, including Dawaki and Zone 7 Dutse, reported restored supply around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Ndidi Mbah, for official details of the incident were unsuccessful.

This latest collapse adds to Nigeria’s long-standing grid instability. Between 2010 and 2022, the country recorded 222 system collapses. In 2024 alone, there were 10, while two “grid incidents” were reported earlier in 2025, which TCN insisted were not full collapses.
