The Nafiu Bala Gombe-led National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of bias and premature action following the recognition of the David Mark-led faction of the party despite an ongoing court case on its legitimacy.
In a communiqué issued after an emergency joint meeting of the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee on Saturday in Abuja, the party said INEC’s decision undermines its leadership structure and poses a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The ADC argued that the commission’s move to upload the Mark leadership on its official portal raises doubts about its neutrality and credibility. The party described the development as an attempt by opportunistic politicians to hijack its platform for personal ambitions, warning that such actions risk deepening divisions and destabilizing the nation’s political landscape.
According to the statement, the ADC has filed a case at the Federal High Court against INEC and the individuals involved, seeking to overturn the recognition and restore its mandate. The party urged the electoral body to exercise restraint and allow the court process to run its course before making further pronouncements on the matter.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and stability, the ADC assured its members that it remains grounded in principles and values, and will not serve as a refuge for politicians seeking shortcuts to power. The party called on members to remain calm, united, and focused while legal proceedings unfold, emphasizing that the integrity of the ADC is non-negotiable.
It concluded by thanking members for their dedication and resilience, pledging to safeguard the party’s legitimacy and emerge stronger from the current leadership tussle.
