A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Acting National Chairman Nafiu Bala, has outlined conditions for accepting the David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola-led interim leadership into the party.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, Bala’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communication, Abimiku Monday, said the Mark-led group would only be recognized if it follows due process by joining through their electoral wards and identifying with the existing party structure under Bala.

“If they follow the legal procedures of joining the party through the electoral wards by identifying with the actual existing structure of Nafiu Bala Gombe, then we would definitely accept whatever discussion they want us to have. But other than that, it is an aberration—an attempt to hijack the structure—and we will not allow that,” Monday stated.

He emphasized, however, that politics allows room for “interaction, alignment, and realignment,” and that the faction is open to working together if constitutional procedures are respected.

Earlier this year, an opposition coalition involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Babachir Lawal, Peter Obi, and others adopted the ADC as a platform. Following this move, David Mark was named Interim National Chairman while Aregbesola emerged as Interim National Secretary.

The Bala-led faction, displeased with the development, subsequently filed a legal action against the coalition.
