The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted the Presidency for suggesting that President Bola Tinubu has no plan to extend his tenure beyond 2031, describing the comment as presumptuous and arrogant.
In a statement on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, insisted that Tinubu’s constitutional mandate ends in 2027 and argued that Nigerians would not want him to remain in office a day longer.
“The Presidency’s hurried reaction to Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that President Bola Tinubu wants to be a life president only proves what many Nigerians have suspected—that this government is out of touch and dangerously complacent,” the ADC said.
“For the President to already speak of staying in office until 2031 suggests he sees re-election as a formality rather than a constitutional duty to show Nigerians his performance. Re-election is not automatic, and President Tinubu has not earned a second term.”
The opposition party further accused the Tinubu administration of deepening divisions in less than two years in power, warning that Nigerians will ultimately judge his leadership in 2027.
