Former senator Shehu Sani has cautioned that many of the ₦20 billion pledged to support First Lady Remi Tinubu’s National Library project may not materialize, describing most political donations as “eye service.”
In a post on his Facebook page Tuesday, Sani commended the First Lady for raising significant funds toward reviving the long-abandoned National Library in Abuja but warned her to ensure that donors fulfill their promises.
“First Lady Senator Remi is lucky to raise ₦20 billion for the National Library that has been abandoned for close to 40 years. That is commendable and well appreciated,” he wrote.
Drawing a comparison, Sani recalled how former First Lady Turai Yar’Adua struggled to secure actual contributions for her International Cancer Center project after the death of her husband, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
“Many people who pledged to donate billions to her International Cancer Center refused to redeem their pledge after Yar’Adua died. The project remained stalled for over a decade along Airport Road, Abuja,” he noted.
Sani added that political donations are often motivated by proximity to power rather than genuine commitment. “Most donations are ‘eye service’ for people in power. Our First Lady should make sure they ‘send alert as quick as possible,’” he said, while also wishing Remi Tinubu a happy birthday.
