Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of diminishing Nigeria through what he described as incompetence, corruption, and divisive leadership.
Obi made the remarks on Wednesday during a press conference on the state of the nation in Abuja as Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary.
“In 1999, we overcame military dictatorship and restored democracy, beginning a renewed journey toward prosperity, freedom, and justice. That journey helped us build Africa’s largest economy and strengthen democratic institutions. But over the last decade, under the APC’s incompetent, divisive, and corrupt leadership, Nigeria has been greatly diminished,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor noted that Nigeria had been positioned at independence to become not only Africa’s giant but a global powerhouse. He added that current policies had worsened poverty, claiming that over 15 million Nigerians were pushed below the poverty line in the government’s first year, even as it continued to impose more taxes without delivering commensurate benefits.
