Senate President Godswill Akpabio has pledged that the red chamber of the National Assembly will remain accountable and responsive in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities.

Speaking on Tuesday in his opening address as the Senate resumed plenary after a 10-week recess, Akpabio urged lawmakers to recommit themselves to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance.

Reaffirming the Senate’s duty to the Nigerian people, he said: “To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive.”

Akpabio emphasized the need to uphold order and integrity within the legislature, warning against actions that could undermine democratic institutions.

“Those who seek to weaken the legislature seek to delete the structure of democracy itself,” he declared.

Describing governance as a “sacred duty of trust and not theatrics,” the Senate President urged competence over popularity in public service.

“If our politics must remain, let us choose the right men for the service of our nation — not the loudest voices or those who seek office as an ornament, but those worthy of the people’s trust,” he stated.

Akpabio also called for swift intervention in the flood disasters affecting parts of the country, assuring victims that the 10th Senate would not relent in addressing the crisis.

On the economy, he highlighted improvements in Nigeria’s oil production and commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for stabilizing state finances.
