The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has formally endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The endorsement was announced in a communiqué issued after the group’s 8th meeting, held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, between Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the communiqué, jointly signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi, Jonathan represents “the best option to restore unity within the PDP and rekindle national cohesion” as the country approaches the next elections.

The coalition, comprising PDP loyalists and support groups across the 19 northern states, reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and praised his ongoing reconciliation and rebuilding efforts.

The group, however, urged Damagum to take decisive action against members accused of engaging in anti-party activities, alleging that some PDP leaders have been collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the opposition.

It insisted that the PDP retains deep grassroots support across the North and called on all members to put aside internal divisions and work together toward victory in 2027.

Addressing ongoing debates over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, the group dismissed the concerns, stating that the matter had already been settled legally and should not serve as a distraction.

The communiqué further pledged unwavering loyalty to the PDP, expressing optimism that with unity and determination, the party could reclaim power at both federal and state levels in the 2027 elections.
