The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticized the government for carrying out demolitions of citizens’ properties without prior notice, describing the act as unlawful and insensitive.

In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Monday, Obi said the government’s actions were worsening the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

PUO Reports gathered that several plazas were recently demolished at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State. The operation was reportedly conducted by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority.

The former Anambra State Governor condemned what he termed the “willful destruction” of people’s homes, shops, and goods by government agencies, describing it as deeply regrettable and unjustifiable.

He stated that such actions were particularly unacceptable under an administration whose policies, according to him, had pushed millions of Nigerians into poverty within just 29 months in office.

Obi further emphasized that instead of aggravating the suffering of citizens, the government should focus on implementing policies that promote compassion and provide relief to struggling families.

“This is happening across the country at a time when the government is supposed to be lifting citizens out of poverty. Instead, it is plunging them deeper into hardship.

“These demolitions destroy livelihoods, undermine businesses, and threaten the economic security of hardworking citizens,” he wrote.
