The Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has demanded the immediate arrest of the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, accusing her of criminal collusion with embattled LP National Chairman, Julius Abure.
The demand was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the Interim National Spokesman of the faction, Toni Akeni, titled “INEC’s Acting Chair in Criminal Collusion with Julius Abure Over Fake Court Order – She Must Be Arrested.”
Akeni alleged that Agbamuche-Mbu had deliberately undermined the rule of law by recognising Abure as the party’s chairman, despite a “subsisting Supreme Court judgment” which, according to the Usman faction, invalidated his leadership claim.
The statement described the acting INEC boss’s decision to invite Abure to a recent meeting with leaders of Nigeria’s 18 registered political parties as “reckless and contemptuous.”
“In her defence, she stated that INEC was merely obeying a court order, claiming that if the faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman presented a valid judgment in their favour, the Commission would comply accordingly,” the statement read.
“However, our independent and painstaking investigation has revealed that no such court order exists. While it is true that Mr Abure filed a suit against INEC in Suit No: CV/1914/2025 before Hon. Justice Kayode Agunloye of Court 40, FCT High Court, Gwagwalada, our formal request for a Certified True Copy (CTC) of any order purportedly recognising him as Chairman was met with categorical confirmation from the court that no such order was ever granted.”
The faction therefore challenged Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu to produce the alleged court order she relied upon to accord recognition to Abure, warning that any continued recognition of the suspended LP chairman amounts to “complicity in electoral fraud and contempt of the highest court in the land.”
The crisis within the Labour Party has deepened in recent months, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership, ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
