Labour Party candidate in the Anambra governorship election, George Moghalu, has explained why he failed to secure victory in his polling unit during Saturday’s vote.

Speaking on a television programme, he attributed his defeat to widespread vote-buying by rival parties, saying he refused to participate in the practice.

“Yes, because I couldn’t afford how much that was being paid. I couldn’t pay, and I refused to pay, I refused to get involved,” he said, noting that many voters accepted money due to economic hardship.

Moghalu alleged that agents of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance were responsible for much of the vote-buying and claimed some individuals had been arrested. He also said officials wearing the party’s tags were seen purchasing votes.

“There’s even a commissioner who was also caught on camera buying votes in my particular constituency,” he added, stressing that he chose not to engage in electoral inducement.
