United States President Donald Trump says he feels an obligation to take legal action against the BBC, accusing the broadcaster of altering part of his January 6 2021 speech in a Panorama documentary.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump claimed the BBC misrepresented his words, saying the organisation had butchered his remarks and defrauded viewers by presenting his message inaccurately.

This marks the first public comment from Trump since his lawyers issued a demand letter seeking one billion dollars in damages. The letter called for a full retraction of the program, a formal apology, and compensation for alleged reputational harm.

They actually changed my January 6 speech, which was a beautiful speech, which was a very calming speech, and they made it sound radical, Trump said. And they actually changed it. What they did was rather incredible.

The BBC previously acknowledged what it described as an error of judgement regarding the edited portion, with chair Samir Shah issuing an apology.

Trump’s legal team delivered the complaint on Sunday, setting a deadline of twenty two hundred GMT on Friday for the BBC to respond.
