Peoples Democratic Party chieftain Umar Sani has described the expulsion of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and other party members as a long overdue step in restoring order within the party.

Speaking on Monday during an interview on Arise Television, Sani maintained that the party’s national elective convention held in Ibadan complied with legal requirements and that the disciplinary actions taken were appropriate despite coming later than some expected.

Sani, a former spokesman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, explained that the party had made genuine efforts to resolve internal disputes through the Ambassador Hassan Adamu Committee, which attempted to reconcile the feuding factions.

“We wanted to resolve this as a family but it became clear there was no way to do so. Wike himself described it as a dispute among family members. One of his conditions was that we agree not to field a presidential candidate in 2027. We cannot wait for a fight to finish; we have to end the fight,” he said.

Defending the timing, he added that the measures taken were “better late than never.”

Sani also addressed reports about election observers at the convention. He noted that the master of ceremonies initially introduced some individuals as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, but Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed later clarified that they were national election observers, not INEC representatives.
