The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has shared insights into how President Bola Tinubu secured victory in the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State.

Wike attributed the win to the significant contributions of the Ikwerre people, who he said played a crucial role in delivering the votes that ensured Tinubu’s success in the state.

He made the remarks on Sunday during his visit to Emohua and Ikwerre local government areas as part of his Christmas outreach.

Additionally, Wike expressed that the Southern region of Nigeria would decide on its next political direction after President Tinubu completes his second term in 2031.

He also criticized individuals he referred to as “new supporters,” who have recently begun chanting the slogan “On your mandate, we shall stand.” Wike emphasized that these individuals should respect prior agreements, warning that such sudden displays of loyalty would not be convincing.

Wike explained that his group had been supporting President Tinubu since 2023, and he cautioned that changing slogans would not change the reality. According to him, true support is tested during challenging times, not when success is guaranteed.

While addressing the Ikwerre community, Wike reminded them of the risks they took in supporting Tinubu when his victory was uncertain. He emphasized that the votes which gave Tinubu victory in Rivers State were largely from the Ikwerre areas.

He further stressed that true commitment is shown when challenges are high, not when success is already assured. Wike argued that the South must be allowed to complete eight years in power, regardless of political party affiliation, and called for continued support for President Tinubu to ensure his success.

Wike concluded by stating that after 2031, once the South completes its tenure under President Tinubu, the region would then assess its next political steps.

He said: “In 2023 when it was difficult, when people never knew that Mr. President would emerge as President, all of us from Ikwerre stock knew politics is about risk. We know that, if you look at the votes that made him win in Rivers, the votes were particularly from Ikwerre.

“When it mattered most, we stood on his mandate, not these people now coming to shout on your mandate, when it was important they couldn’t shout on your mandate.

“You take stands when things are tough, not when food is ready. We took this position when things were tough, and we are still standing by it.

“The South must complete their eight years, and completing the eight years, it doesn’t matter which party we belong to, give Mr. President the support to succeed.

“In 2031, after the South has completed its eight years through President Tinubu, we will know what next.”
