Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described the Peoples Democratic Party PDP as “alive, strong, and resilient,” dismissing media speculation suggesting that the party is in decline.
Jonathan reaffirmed that the PDP remains a key pillar of Nigeria’s democratic system and noted that it is the only surviving original political party since 1998.
He made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee NWC, led by the National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN, at his private office in Abuja.
The visit focused on reconciliation efforts within the party and strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Emphasizing the party’s history and institutional strength, Jonathan described the PDP as more than just a political platform, referring to it as a national institution.
“The PDP has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999. I have benefited from this party, serving as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. I am grateful and remain committed to contributing to its growth,” he said.
The former president urged party leaders to place national interest and institutional development above personal ambitions, stressing that strong political parties are essential for democratic stability.
Earlier, Turaki expressed appreciation to Jonathan for his guidance and continued loyalty to the party, assuring him that the PDP leadership is implementing a comprehensive Rebirth Agenda aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the party.
“Our goal is to return power to the people and reposition the PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging aggrieved members because a united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.
Other members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Professor Jerry Gana, General Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke SAN, and other members of the NWC.
