Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed criticisms surrounding his political decisions, insisting that politics is guided by interests, power and the will of the people, not sentiment or emotions.
Wike made the remarks on Sunday during a “thank you” visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, his political stronghold, where he met with supporters and political leaders.
The former Rivers State governor said his foray into politics was a conscious and deliberate choice, stressing that he never aspired to be a journalist, pastor, trader or public commentator.
“I did not say I wanted to be a journalist or shape public opinion through writing. I said clearly that I wanted to be a politician, and that is what I am,” Wike said.
He explained that his visit to Obio/Akpor was to appreciate the people for their continued support, noting that gratitude is a key principle of leadership.
“When someone does good to you, you acknowledge it. Gratitude matters,” he stated.
According to the minister, politics has no room for sentiment, as interests determine outcomes. He added that power is not given freely but taken, stressing the strategic political importance of Obio/Akpor in Rivers State.
“Nobody becomes governor in Rivers without Obio/Akpor making a pronouncement. Nobody becomes senator in Rivers East without Obio/Akpor deciding,” he said, warning that political actors who insult the area would still return seeking votes.
Wike also addressed calls for his removal from office, saying such decisions rest solely with President Bola Tinubu.
“If my appointor believes I can no longer offer anything, he has the right. It is not for anyone else to decide,” he said, adding that President Tinubu understands his value and does not need external pressure.
He further said the President has done much for Rivers State and expressed confidence that the people would reciprocate the support in the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, said Obio/Akpor controls over 684,000 votes out of the 3.5 million registered voters in Rivers State, making it a dominant political force.
Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr Gift Worlu, described Wike as a “gift” to the council, the state and Nigeria, citing his performance at local, state and national levels. He assured the minister of continued political support, especially ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, also reaffirmed the support of the local government and lawmakers, promising stronger backing for President Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027.
