Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said any potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) would depend strictly on clear political guarantees, especially regarding control of Kano State and the protection of his political structure.
Kwankwaso made this known on Wednesday at his Miller Road residence in Kano while hosting NNPP leaders and members from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas.
He explained that while he remains open to political realignment, he is unwilling to repeat past experiences where his political bloc helped to secure power at the federal level but was later sidelined.
According to him, talks about joining the APC cannot advance without explicit assurances on the future of NNPP lawmakers, party officials, and grassroots supporters who make up the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Kwankwaso warned that history must not repeat itself, stressing that his supporters’ interests must be fully protected in any alliance.
He added that, so far, no leader of the APC has offered concrete guarantees that his political structure would be preserved or that the Kano State government would remain intact under any proposed arrangement.
“I need clarity before making any move. Without concrete guarantees, there can be no discussion about defection,” Kwankwaso said, reaffirming that his supporters remain loyal to the NNPP until clear political safeguards are provided.
