The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abia State Chapter, on Friday, January 16, addressed the press in Umuahia, where it passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, citing what it described as demonstrable performance and visible governance outcomes across the state.
Speaking through a communiqué signed by its Chairman, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, ALGON said the press briefing became necessary following recent political statements and meetings by some political actors questioning the tenure and political future of Governor Otti. The association described such statements as speculative and disconnected from the realities on ground in Abia State.
ALGON acknowledged the constitutional rights of citizens to freedom of expression and political association but emphasized that leadership in a democratic system is determined by performance and the freely expressed will of the electorate through credible elections, not by political pronouncements or alliances.
According to the association, Governor Otti’s administration has, since assumption of office, recorded verifiable improvements across all 17 local government areas, particularly in road infrastructure, healthcare delivery, educational facilities, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, clearance of salary arrears, and prudent management of public resources.
ALGON further noted that Abia State has witnessed a renewed sense of pride and confidence among its citizens, both at home and in the diaspora, attributing this to restored public trust in governance and the improved image of the state after years of institutional decline.
Describing itself as the custodian of grassroots governance, ALGON stated that its members are in constant engagement with communities across the state and can attest to growing public confidence in the current direction of governance and the tangible benefits being experienced by residents.
The association cautioned against attempts by individuals or groups to pre-empt the democratic process or undermine ongoing development through divisive political rhetoric, urging political actors to engage constructively by offering ideas, policies, and alternative visions capable of advancing development, unity, and stability in Abia State.
ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies and programmes that strengthen local government administration, deepen institutional development, and improve the quality of life of citizens across Abia State.
In a strong political declaration, ALGON collectively and unequivocally endorsed Governor Alex Otti for re-election in 2027, expressing appreciation for what it described as a robust and collaborative relationship between the state government and the local government councils.
The association concluded by stating that Abia State remains on a clear path of renewal and progress, emphasizing that the future of the state firmly rests in the hands of its people, whose collective judgment must always be respected.
