Pursuant to Section 188 (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Rivers State House of Assembly at its 60th Legislative Sitting on Friday, voted in favour of the provisions of Section 188(3) of the Constitution which empowers the House to resolve by motion, without any debate whether the allegations levelled against Governor Siminialayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odi should be investigated.

When the Speaker, Rt Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule put the question, 25 Members of the House present voted in the affirmative, giving rise to the request by the Speaker that a Seven – Member panel be appointed by the Chief Judge of State in line with the Constitution.

Earlier, honourable Members had jointly addressed the press through the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, as a way of reaching out to the good people of Rivers State on the topical issue of the impeachment process against Governor Siminialayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The Members stated categorically that though some leaders and well-meaning Nigerians had called them to suspend the impeachment process against the duo but the recalcitrant disposition of the Governor and his deputy in listening to wise counsel has made them see impeachment as the most viable option in the circumstance.

Speaking further, Members view the Governor’s despotic approach to governance as a threat to democracy; adding that the Governor and his deputy are the aggressors and serial offenders of the Constitution. They called on stakeholders who are calling for the halting of the impeachment process to likewise call on the Governor and his deputy to do the thing by obeying the Constitution.

The Members concluded their address by thanking President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in resolving the impasse, but for the obduracy and arrogance displayed by Governor Fubara and his deputy. They pledged to continue to speak for the people of Rivers State, and in defence of the Constitution.
