The directive by Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo ordering markets to reopen for business on Mondays generated mixed reactions across the state, amid lingering security concerns.

In the early hours of Monday, the situation reflected continued tension, as several streets across parts of the state were largely deserted. Vehicular movement was minimal, while school buses were reportedly empty of pupils.

Findings showed that the disputed Onitsha Main Market was officially open, although only a few traders were present in the early hours of the day.

A trader at Lagos Line in Onitsha Main Market said traders were instructed to sign an attendance register with clock in time as proof of compliance with the governor’s directive.

Some traders blamed Governor Soludo for the low turnout, arguing that the sit at home order had been gradually losing its grip before his directive allegedly reenergised separatist elements who had threatened reprisals against anyone opening shops.

However, by about midday, business activities began to pick up as more traders gradually opened their shops and normal trading resumed.

A trader at Emeka Offor Plaza Mrs Chinyere who sells phone accessories welcomed the development.

“We are happy that Monday trading has commenced. We thank Soludo for making it happen. How can people be trading in other parts of South East, but here in Anambra we cannot do same. We are happy with Soludo,” she said.

Meanwhile, security presence remained heavy around major markets, with police and military patrol vans stationed in and around trading areas to maintain law and order.
