The Peoples Democratic Party PDP has accused the Nigerian Senate of attempting to undermine electoral transparency through what it described as a “backdoor plot” aimed at weakening the real time electronic transmission of election results.

The party made the allegation in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and issued on Tuesday.

The PDP was reacting to the Senate’s decision to revisit its earlier stance on electronic transmission of results by introducing an addendum that allows manual transmission where technological challenges arise.

“We hold the firm view that this addendum is nothing more than a backdoor attempt to achieve the same objective as the earlier outright rejection, while pretending to align with the wishes of the Nigerian people,” the statement said.

The party stressed that provisions for manual transmission of results already exist under the current Electoral Act, noting that the renewed push for electronic transmission is intended to strengthen electoral integrity.

“The current agitation for electronic transmission is aimed at introducing a second layer authentication mechanism that prevents the alteration of results en route to collation centres a malpractice that has historically been the bane of Nigeria’s electoral process,” the PDP stated.

It further argued that there was no justification for questioning the reliability of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System BVAS when it comes to transmitting election results.

According to the statement, it is inconceivable for the BVAS, which is used successfully for voter accreditation throughout elections, “to suddenly become unreliable for the transmission of results and accreditation data arising from that same exercise.”

The PDP alleged that the Senate’s inclusion of a caveat allowing manual transmission reflects entrenched fears among certain lawmakers who oppose electronic transmission, with particular reference to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

“They must be reminded that Nigeria is bigger than their narrow personal and political interests,” the party said.

Calling on the Conference Committee to adopt the version of the Electoral Amendment Bill passed by the House of Representatives, the PDP urged lawmakers to prioritise democratic stability over political calculations.

“They must rise above the instincts of politicians fixated on the next election and instead focus on the sustenance of democracy and the protection of future generations,” the statement added.

The party warned that any failure of the democratic process would be historically attributed to those who opposed full electronic transmission of election results.

“Should this democracy fail, the names of Senator Akpabio and all Senators who voted against electronic transmission will undoubtedly occupy a conspicuous chapter in the book of infamy,” it stated.

The PDP also appealed to Nigerians to remain resolute in their demand for real time electronic transmission of election results, describing it as critical to the survival of democracy.

“This is no time for excuses. This hard won democracy is far too valuable to be left in the hands of politicians alone,” the statement concluded.
