The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that elections are won through measurable performance rather than what he described as “street drama.”
Wike made the remark in Benin City during the handover of 54 construction equipment to the 18 local government areas in Edo State.
According to him, Nigerians should be wary of politicians he termed “emergency democrats” who attempt to suddenly identify with ordinary citizens during election periods.
“Let me say this clearly, winning an election is not by dancing. It is not by buying corn on the road,” Wike said.
“Winning an election is to show the people what you have done and the foundation you have laid.”
He criticized what he described as public displays aimed at gaining sympathy from voters.
“When they were in office, they hardly came out to talk about buying corn on the road to chew. Something you have never done since you were born, simply because you want to deceive the people to say you are one of the people,” he added.
Wike also praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing ongoing development projects in the Federal Capital Territory.
“Mr President is busy developing the FCT. That is performance. That is what people should look at,” he stated.
Although a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike said he would not challenge the presidential election outcome, pointing to what he described as tangible achievements in the FCT.
