The Edo State Government has suggested that the attempted attack on former presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, in Benin City may have been linked to internal disagreements within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on ARISE News, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Kassim Afegbua, said preliminary findings indicate that the unrest stemmed from internal party tensions rather than a coordinated external assault.
According to Afegbua, some ADC members who were reportedly barred from attending a crucial meeting may have reacted in frustration, leading to the disturbance.
He disclosed that tensions within the party had escalated earlier in the week and spilled into the following day, straining relationships among party leaders.
Afegbua also recounted that the earlier dispute disrupted movement in parts of the city, including access to the road leading to the Government House, forcing him to take an alternative route.
He noted that video footage from the scene showed visible discord among party leaders, including reports that gates were shut to prevent certain members from attending the meeting.
The commissioner added that the situation may have intensified when it became known that Peter Obi was expected at the gathering, possibly in connection with a planned defection.
He emphasized that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
