National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Nenadi Usman, has urged Julius Abure and his supporters to seek a return to party leadership positions through due electoral process.
Usman stated that Abure and other aggrieved members are free to contest for the party’s chairmanship and other offices at the forthcoming national congress, rather than insisting on retaining leadership outside constitutional procedures.
“I call on everyone to please put selfish interest aside, and put the interest of the party in front. Come and let’s work together,” she said on Wednesday in Abuja during a high-level stakeholders’ summit themed Reuniting the Labour Party Family: Consolidating Strength for Sustainable Political Impact, held at the party’s national secretariat.
She added that anyone strongly interested in occupying a leadership position should participate in the congress.
“If anybody feels strongly that he must occupy any position in the party congresses, go and contest election. If you win, you will be declared a winner,” she said.
In January, the Federal High Court in Abuja removed Abure as LP National Chairman. Justice Peter Lifu, citing a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, recognized Usman—former Minister of Finance—as the legitimate leader of the party.
The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Usman-led caretaker committee as the only valid authority representing the party pending its national convention.
Despite the ruling, Abure and his faction have maintained that they remain in control of the party’s affairs.
