Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho has reacted to the red card he received during his team’s 2 to 2 draw against FC Porto in the Portuguese top flight league on Sunday.
The incident sparked a heated exchange between Mourinho and members of Porto’s coaching staff, which eventually led to the referee dismissing the Portuguese manager from the touchline.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho rejected the referee’s claim that he kicked the ball toward Porto’s bench, an action that reportedly contributed to the decision to send him off.
“I wasn’t targeting their bench,” Mourinho said during his post match remarks.
“I kicked the ball to the stands to give lucky fans a chance (to get a match ball).”
Mourinho also expressed displeasure over comments allegedly made by Lino Gondinho, a member of Porto’s coaching staff, who he said repeatedly called him a traitor during the encounter.
“I would like him to explain what I have betrayed. Because I gave all my heart and soul to Porto,” he said.
