Security operatives in Calabar on Tuesday sealed off a venue designated for the inauguration of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Membership Registration, Mobilisation and Revalidation Committee.
The committee, chaired by Eko Alobo, had been constituted by the party in Cross River State as part of preparations ahead of its upcoming primaries.
The inauguration was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at an event centre located along Marian Road by 10:00 a.m.
However, a team of mobile police officers reportedly arrived at the venue as early as 7:00 a.m. and cordoned off the premises, preventing party members and organisers from accessing the facility.
Sources close to the security personnel disclosed that the action followed instructions linked to a petition allegedly submitted by some members of the party.
Attempts by party stakeholders to resolve the situation did not immediately produce results.
Meanwhile, prominent ADC leaders, including the party’s South South Zonal Vice Chairman, Dr Usani Uguru Usani, and former Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Bassey Eko Ewa, reportedly met with the Commissioner of Police in a bid to address the development.
Following the standoff, organisers later relocated the meeting to the residence of Dr Usani Usani, where a large number of party supporters and stakeholders subsequently gathered.
