The Director-General of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Ayo Omotayo, has said that negotiating with bandits responsible for killings in Nigeria can be acceptable if it ultimately helps protect citizens.

Omotayo made the statement on Wednesday while responding to questions during an interview on Arise Television, monitored.

He was speaking on the security situation in Nigeria, particularly the increasing attacks that have resulted in the deaths of civilians and even senior military officers.

According to him, the primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the safety of its citizens and the protection of national assets.

“One thing that is clear is that the purpose of government is to secure its people and secure its assets,” he said.

Omotayo added that governments must be open to all possible options that could lead to improved security across the country.

“So I believe that any government that is responsible will look for all means always to ensure that the people are protected.

“Negotiating with Ahmad Gumi or any of those other forces doesn’t mean weakness in government. It’s welcome if it’s going to lead us to having our people secured everywhere in Nigeria,” he stated.

He acknowledged that there has been a recent increase in security challenges but noted that the country had previously experienced some level of stability.

“I agree that there has been an upsurge recently, but before now, we all will agree that we had some semblance of peace,” he said.

Omotayo expressed optimism that Nigeria’s security forces would be able to address the resurgence of violence if they receive the necessary support.
