Godswill Akpabio has stirred reactions after mocking opposition parties during plenary at the Nigerian Senate.
Akpabio made the remarks while reading a defection letter from former Sokoto State governor and senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, confirming his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The letter also referenced resignations and defections involving members of the Labour Party Nigeria (LP) and other minority caucuses.
While reading the letter, Akpabio paused and commented on what he described as the crisis within opposition parties.
“Oh, PDP is gone!” he remarked, referring to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He further added, “Even the Labour Party is dead. I’ve read about three different political parties now,” as he continued to mention additional defections.
Akpabio also dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was responsible for the internal problems facing opposition parties.
According to him, the turmoil stems from leadership failures within the affected parties.
“You cannot accuse the ruling party of tampering with their leadership because here you have All Progressives Grand Alliance, you have Labour, you have MVP, and all those things. So all of them have a problem. They’ve not been able to put their parties together. So APC cannot be blamed for this,” he said.
Akpabio added that the developments were strengthening the ruling party’s dominance in the Senate chamber.
