Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ardo Zubariu and Chinsom Nwakanma, have said the support of the Igbo community in the nation’s capital played a major role in the party’s victory during the February 21 Federal Capital Territory area council elections.
The APC leaders made the claim in a joint statement issued on Saturday.
According to them, it would have been difficult for the party to win five area council chairmanship seats without the strong support from residents of South-East origin living in Abuja.
They also commended the leadership of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, for mobilizing residents to support APC candidates during the election.
“We sincerely appreciate the South-East residents in the FCT for standing with the Deputy Speaker and supporting APC candidates during the election. Their solidarity and participation played a vital role in the successes recorded by the party,” the statement read.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared APC candidates winners of the chairmanship seats in AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji area councils.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the chairmanship election in Gwagwalada area council.
