The Nigerian Labour Congress has proposed a new minimum wage of N154,000, citing worsening economic hardship and declining purchasing power among Nigerian workers.

The demand was outlined in a letter issued by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, a body under the Nigerian Labour Congress.

The letter, signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga, emphasised the “urgent necessity for an upward review of salaries and allowances” within the public service.

According to the council, the current wage structure no longer reflects prevailing economic realities, as rising inflation, increasing food prices and higher transportation costs continue to place pressure on workers.

The council stated that the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is intended to restore a reasonable standard of living and urged the Federal Government to begin immediate negotiations.

The demand comes amid growing concerns over the cost of living crisis in Nigeria, with many households struggling to meet basic needs.
