Former England defender Matt Upson has identified Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain as the teams that will provide the “real test” for Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League.

All three sides secured qualification for the quarter finals following Tuesday’s Round of 16 second leg fixtures.

Arsenal defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 to progress 3-1 on aggregate, Real Madrid overcame Manchester City 2-1 to advance 5-1 overall, while Paris Saint Germain eliminated Chelsea with an emphatic 8-2 aggregate victory.

Upson, who was present at the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal’s match, praised the Gunners’ performance.

“Arsenal were back to the Arsenal you see at home where the match starts and they are all over the opposition.

“They were all out, pressing, Leverkusen couldn’t get anywhere.

“They didn’t have many chances but the corners started coming in, and then we saw them get the chances.

“It took some brilliance by Eze to bring that goal and from there on, it never felt like Arsenal weren’t going to go through.

“In that second half, Leverkusen came out stronger but Arsenal just carried on playing their game. In this fixture they were comfortable, they were very business like. The stadium had a positive feel before the game and that just played into it.

“If they face a side like PSG or Madrid, that will be the real test for this side. That’s when we’ll see what they’re really made of,” he said.
