The Social Democratic Party, SDP, Imo State chapter, has constituted a new interim executive to oversee its affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chigozie Ekeogu emerged as Chairman alongside other executive members tasked with repositioning the party.

The newly appointed leadership is expected to drive membership registration and mobilization efforts, as well as prepare the party for electoral contests.

Addressing party members, the National Youth Leader of the SDP and immediate past Imo State Chairman, Ifeanyi Henry Eluwa, said the move was aimed at strengthening the party’s structure across the 27 local government areas of the state.

“Today, we announce Gozie Ekeogu as the Interim Chairman of SDP, Imo State. His leadership will take us to congress and prepare us to participate effectively in electoral contests.

“We will always work in line with the ideologies of the party which is anchored on Social Justice and Good Governance.

“It was on these principles that MKO Abiola based his campaign and won the presidential election that was truncated by the military,” he said.

Eluwa described the SDP as a stable and democratically inclined party without internal factional divisions, adding that this positions it strongly to reshape political dynamics in the state and beyond.

He disclosed that more than 80 aspirants for elective positions in 2027 have indicated interest in joining the party, citing its unity and stability.

The outgoing chairman also dismissed rumours of a merger between SDP and APP, stating that while the party remains open to coalition arrangements, no such agreement currently exists.

He expressed readiness to support the interim chairman in strengthening the party’s structure and achieving electoral success.

Other members of the interim executive include Achonwa Amaobichukwu as Organizing Secretary, Ngozi Amajuoyi as Women Leader and Labour and Civil Society Secretary, as well as Bright Nze, among others.

In his remarks, the new State Chairman, Ekeogu, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work with his team to strengthen the party’s presence across the state, local government areas and wards.
