The Abia State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Doc Matt Ekwuribe, has been described as one of the standout performers in the cabinet of Governor Alex Otti, with his leadership credited for revitalizing a once low-profile ministry.
Stakeholders and observers note that the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy has witnessed a significant transformation under Ekwuribe, evolving into a more vibrant and strategic arm of government aligned with the “New Abia” agenda.
Beyond administrative performance, his political influence is also gaining attention. As a leader in Amaasa Ntigha Ward 7 in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Ekwuribe is said to have strengthened grassroots mobilization alongside with other Ward Leaders in the Ward, with over 1,000 new members reportedly joining the Labour Party through his outreach efforts. His growing appeal is reportedly cutting across party lines.
Further underscoring his rising profile, Governor Otti recently commended the Commissioner during the March 2026 media Chat, highlighting a major milestone achieved by the ministry.
The Abia State Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, alongside the National Commission for Museums and Monuments , the federal agency responsible for managing Nigeria’s national museums, monuments, and cultural heritage assets.
Under the agreement, the Abia State Government will co manage the Ojukwu Bunker and the National War Museum Umuahia, for a period of 25 years. The initiative is expected to drive revitalization, improve tourism potential, and enhance cultural preservation within the state.
Analysts say the development signals a strategic shift toward leveraging culture and heritage as tools for economic growth, with Ekwuribe’s leadership playing a central role in positioning Abia as an emerging hub in Nigeria’s creative and tourism sectors.
Governor Alex Otti is doing his very Best to revamp every Ministry, Department and Agency of the Abia State Government which is already yielding positive results.
