The Federal Government has commenced the prosecution of over 500 suspects accused of involvement in terrorist activities across Nigeria.

The trial, which opened on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, involves individuals allegedly linked to a series of attacks in northern Nigeria that have resulted in the deaths of more than 2,000 people and widespread destruction of property.

According to authorities, the suspects are accused of direct participation in attacks as well as providing support to террорист groups through financing, supply of arms and ammunition, and provision of food and logistics.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, is leading the prosecution team alongside the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

On the defence side, the Director of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Aliu Bagudu Abubakar, is heading a team of lawyers representing the accused persons.

Fagbemi confirmed that 227 suspects have so far been arraigned before 10 judges of the Federal High Court, noting that the proceedings are ongoing. He commended the judges for sitting during the Easter holiday period to ensure the trials proceed without delay.

To promote transparency and adherence to due process, representatives from international and local organizations, including Amnesty International and the Nigerian Bar Association, are observing the proceedings.

The suspects were transported to court under heavy security, with personnel from the Department of State Services and the police providing protection.

In one of the cases, Justice Binta Fatima Nyako sentenced a food supplier to insurgents in Borno State, Hamatu Modu, to a prison term after he admitted to supplying food and intelligence to terrorists.

In separate rulings, additional convictions were secured against individuals found guilty of aiding террорист groups through various forms of support, including logistics and supply of goods.

The court also directed that convicted persons undergo rehabilitation and deradicalization programmes after serving their sentences, while the Federal Ministry of Interior will determine the correctional facilities where they will serve their terms.

The trial is scheduled to continue on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
