Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted he had doubts about his team finding the net during their narrow 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League quarter final first leg on Tuesday.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 91st minute, securing a crucial away win for the Gunners.

Goalkeeper David Raya delivered an impressive performance with several key saves, while an effort from Martin Zubimendi was ruled out for offside.

Speaking after the match, Arteta acknowledged that his side lacked sharpness in the attacking third and struggled to convert chances.

On whether he doubted his team would score, he said, “Yes, because when we got into the final third and we sat there we missed the final bit.

“We had to be a little bit crisper, faster, more efficient to break them down when they had that block.

“We had a goal disallowed and there were two or three occasions where we were close but we lacked that final pass.

“In the end, a magic moment from the finishers win us the game.”
