Nigerian youths and civil society organizations have called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

The group gathered on Wednesday at Jonathan’s Abuja office, where they staged a demonstration, chanting slogans and displaying placards urging his return to power.

Some of the messages read, “GEJ: Nigeria is dying, save it!” and “GEJ, Nigerian youths break the medicine wey dem do you,” while another warned, “GEJ, if you don’t run, we quench.”

Speaking during the protest, public analyst and former Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Tom Ohikere, said the group had waited for more than three hours in anticipation of meeting the former president, who did not appear.

“Everywhere that we have visited in the course of our nationwide consultation over a period of six months, the clamor for his return to power to rescue our country has been loud and unmistakable,” he said.

As of the time of the report, Jonathan had not issued any official response to the calls.

The protest adds to increasing pressure from groups within Nigeria and in the diaspora urging the former president to participate in the 2027 race.

The development also comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress, ADC, whose members and supporters recently staged a protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, demanding a reversal of the delisting of the David Mark led leadership.

The growing political activity reflects heightened momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
