Nigeria popular musician, Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, better known as Skales, has revealed that he became homeless and slept in his car after Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) failed to renew his recording deal and evicted him from their apartment.
Skales said he left the Banky W-owned record label penniless and contemplated relocating abroad before his song ‘Shake Body’ blew up and changed his life.
He disclosed this in a recent interview with Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos.
He said: “When I left EME, I had nothing. Everything just ended in one day. I went from enjoying a luxurious life to sleeping in the car. As soon as my deal ended, I lost the house, they [EME management] told me to leave the house immediately.
“All I had was one car, a Ford Explorer. And I was sleeping inside the car for a long time. Little did I know that I had a song that was going to change my life on my flash drive. So months later, I just put out the song [‘Shake Body’]. I didn’t have any promo money, nothing. I just uploaded it on Soundcloud. And it was just a wildfire. It was crazy. I didn’t even know the song was big. I believed, but I gave up because I was trying to japa (relocate abroad). Then I got a call from Harry Tee, God rest his soul. That was how my life changed.”
