The head of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, is being tried on terrorism-related allegations by the federal government. Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has withdrawn from the case.
Following Kanu’s outburst in which he claimed to have lost all faith in the judge, it was reported that the judge decided to withdraw from the trial on Tuesday.
Kanu had leaped from the dock in the middle of Tuesday’s proceedings and told his attorney, Aloy Ejimako, to take a seat so he could address the judge.
During the ensuing commotion, Kanu assumed control of the proceedings, declared his lack of trust in Justice Binta Nyako, and asked her to save him right away.
Kanu’s request was denied by the federal government’s attorney, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, but the judge persisted on withdrawing.
While Awomolo maintained that the trial’s opening order was consistent with a Supreme Court ruling, Justice Binta Nyako stated she would rather have a different judge preside over the case.
After that, the judge announced her resignation and gave the order to return the case file to Chief Judge John Tsoho of the Federal High Court so that it may be assigned to an other judge.
Kanu has since been brought back into the DSS’s custody.
