Any construction above two floors in Ogun State must obtain an All Risk Insurance Policy Certificate.

The Ogun State Building Production Management Authority Regulation (OGBPMA) 2022 is compliant with this.

This was said by Olatunji Odunlami, Commissioner of Physical Planning and Urban Development, during a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Odunlami urged insurance providers to act as hawks in the effort to uphold the law’s terms.

As per his statement, the contractor or developer is responsible for maintaining the All Risk Insurance Policy, which will provide coverage for both material and human assets throughout the construction phase. This will guarantee that individuals who are legally permitted to be on the site, as well as building materials and other equipment, are safeguarded against any type of harm, loss, or destruction.

According to the commissioner, “the coverage extends to innocent bystanders and their property, as well as adjacent properties, humans, and animals domiciled in them.”

In order to protect the building against fires, damage, collapse, and other unanticipated events, building owners and subsequent occupants must also purchase a building insurance policy.

The commissioner reaffirmed the current administration’s dedication to improving public safety and lowering incidents at construction sites.

He went on to say that their goals are to safeguard developers and investors from monetary losses, foster a culture of risk-taking and accountability, and aid in the development of the state’s robust and sustainable building and construction sector.

The purpose of the consultative meeting, according to the Permanent Secretary, Engineer Sakirudeen Salaam, earlier in his speech, was to make relevant stakeholders aware of the provisions of the main law and the five regulations that direct the work of the ministry and its agencies. This would enable them to work with the government to achieve orderliness in the state’s physical planning.

Speaking on behalf of the underwriters and insurance companies, Mr. Yomi Babalola expressed gratitude to the state government for demonstrating a willingness to collaborate with the industry in order to reduce risk and safeguard the public from unanticipated events. He also pledged full cooperation in order to fulfill the legal obligations.
